FIRECAST® Fire Danger Index Bulletin over Piedmont
| FIRECAST®
is the Fire Danger Index Forecasting System for alpine regions designed
and developed by the Remote
Sensing Group at Politecnico di Torino (RSG) and implemented by
EST S.r.l.
EST S.r.l. released FIRECAST® application to RSG for one year, for research aims. The online system is the FIRECAST® experimental release: in order to improve the system's efficacy through an extensive and comprehensive validation procedure, fire events historical data over alpine regions are welcome. FIRECAST® is a complex evolution of the Canadian Fire Weather Index (FWI) . As it is a meteorological index, FWI evaluates the fire danger risk depending on weather conditions, on their past evolution and on their interaction with specific environmental properties of soil and vegetation. Starting from the Canadian index, conceived for high latitudes and plane orography, FIRECAST® implements climatological and orographic corrections in order to adapt the system at the alpine-region climate and latitude characteristics. FIRECAST® operates with input data taking into account terrain slope, snow cover, soil moisture, aspect and vegetation cover. Weather input data are weather forecast maps. No measured data are used. FIRECAST® outputs are foreseen fire-danger-risk index maps, with forecasting time up to 72 hours and 0.25° spatial resolution. |
